Once a particular technology level is researched for the various schools, all of the projects at that level start being researched (unless they have a secondary school requirement). For example, when you hit tech level (TL) 10 in Mathematics, any level 10 Mathematics technology will begin research. In the technology screen, there is a list of techs currently being researched. Included is a report of how many turns it will take for that tech to finish researching ('Turns Remaining').

Unfortunately, that number actually has nothing to do with how many turns it will take to research the tech. This patch fixes the system so that it displays the actual turns remaining. Note that if an overrun occurs it may change the amount of time to research a technology.
